Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or award for the spectacular season he had with Real Madrid. The French international scored a number of crucial goals to help Los Blancos clinch their 14th UEFA Champions League title. He was clearly a favourite to clinch this award given by France Football every year. Before the winner was declared, even Lionel Messi had said that Benzema deserved the Ballon d’Or for his performances last season.
Benzema was handed his award by former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, who is also his compatriot. It was under Zidane that Los Blancos won three consecutive Champions League titles, and Benzema was one of the most important figures of the team on all three occasions.
Zidane, widely considered one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game, himself won the Ballon d’Or in 1998. He was the most important player for France in the 1998 World Cup, and helped his team win the final of the tournament by scoring two goals against Brazil. Zidane, popularly known as Zizou, was also adjudged the FIFA World Player of the Year on three separate occasions- 1998, 2000, and 2003.
Zidane left Real Madrid in 2021 and is still without a club. He was linked with various clubs for his anticipated return to a managerial position, but the former France captain has not made any official declaration of comeback yet.
