Answer- Tamil Nadu

The Kazhuveli Wetland was declared a bird sanctuary in December 2021. It is now known as the Kazhuveli Birds Sanctuary. The proposal was first put forward by Shekar Kumar, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wild Life Warden. It was accepted by Surpiya Sahu, the Environment and Forest Secretary.

The government of Tamil Nadu issued a notification declaring the wetland’s new status. The notification read, “In exercise of the powers conferred in the subsection (1) of the section 18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the Governor of Tamil Nadu hereby declares his intention to constitute the said area as Kazhuveli Wetlands Birds Sanctuary”.

After the announcement, Sahu, in a tweet, said, “A happy day for us as Tamil Nadu gets a new Bird Sanctuary at Kazhuveli near Chennai. This will be TN’s 16th Bird Sanctuary. This brackish water wetland attracts a large number of birds being in the Central Asian flyway of migratory birds.”

The wetland is a brackish water lake, and is the second largest lake of such type in India, with the top spot going to Pulicat lake.
