He was born into the working class and moved to So Paulo as a child with his family from Pernambuco. He started off as a union activist and metalworker. He oversaw significant strikes by Brazilian workers between 1978 and 1980 while the country was still under military rule, then in 1980, as politics in Brazil began to open up, he helped found the Workers’ Party.

One of the prominent figures in the Diretas Já movement, which pushed for democratic elections, was Lula.

On October 27, 1945, Luiz Inácio da Silva was born in Caetés, a city in Northeastern Brazil that is 250 kilometers from Recife, the state capital of Pernambuco. He was the seventh of Aristides Inácio da Silva and Eudice Ferreira de Melo’s eight children.
