Matthew Fitzpatrick recently won his first golf major. Which title did he win?
Answer: US Open
Matt Fitzpatrick of England won the US Open in June 2022. The 27-year-old took control of a tight three-way match at Brookline with a terrific break and an even better shot on the 15th hole for a two-shot swing. From a fairway bunker on the 18th, he was equally effective in saving par for a 2-under 68. He had a 6-under 134 final score.
"No words," Fitzpatrick said after receiving the trophy. "It's what you grow up dreaming of. It's something I've worked so hard for for such a long time. And you know there was a big monkey on my back trying to win over here. And everyone, all they ever talked about was that. And you know, to do it as a major for my first win, there's nothing better."
With the victory, Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to do it since 2013. Fitzpatrick previously triumphed at The Country Club in the 2013 U.S. Amateur. He is the only foreign-born golfer to have won the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur.
The competition was held in the midst of unrest in the typically polite sport. The controversial LIV Golf series' dubious launch this month has created discord in men's professional golf.
Government-funded LIV Golf has attracted elite players with enormous cash incentives and guaranteed prizes. The PGA Tour responded by suspending 17 players who decided to participate in the new series.
Players from opposing sides of the conflict joined together for the Open, which is organised by the U.S. Golf Association, despite the tensions that loom over the sport. According to USGA CEO Mike Whan, it may become more difficult for LIV players to participate in future U.S. Opens.
