Soviet Union

Answer- Soviet Union

Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev led the country from 1985 to 1991 as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He was the President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991 and enabled the dissolution of the Communist state.

Born in Stavropol Krai to a Russian-Ukrainian mixed family, Gorbachev grew up when Joseph Stalin was at the helm of affairs in the Soviet Union (1922-1953). His initial years were spent working in collective farming.

Mikhail Gorbachev went on to study at the Moscow State University and obtained his law degree in 1955. Gorbachev, ideologically oriented towards Marxism and Leninism till a point, started leaning more towards social democratic ideals later in life when he occupied important positions in the Communist party’s hierarchy.

Mikhail Gorbachev came up with the ideas of “glasnost” which means openness and “perestroika” which means reform. These ideals finally led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the most controversial leaders of the 20th Century. While the western world was deeply appreciative of Gorbachev for ensuring the end of Communist rule, a large section of people in Russia were critical of his policies.

Mikhail Gorbachev died on August 30, 2022.
