Amazon Quiz: Mount Semeru volcano recently erupted in which country?

Options:

Chile

Ecuador

Indonesia

Nepal

Answer- Indonesia

On December 4, 2021, Mount Semeru, a volcano on the Indonesian island of Java’s East Java region, started to erupt. The lava dome at the summit had collapsed due to heavy rains when the eruption started.

At least 5,205 dwellings as well as a number of public structures were destroyed by pyroclastic flows and lahars. Over five persons are still missing, there were at least 104 injuries, and at least 69 fatalities.

Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation had reported that dense clouds of white and grey erupted from the volcano

The agency advised locals to stay 1,500 feet away from riverbanks and to avoid any activity within a 3-mile radius of the eruption centre owing to the possibility of lava flow.

Additionally, the PVMBG warned people to avoid going anywhere within 8 miles southeast of the eruption’s centre.

Indonesia, which has 142 volcanoes, has the most people worldwide who live within six miles of a volcano, or 8.6 million people.

On August 29, 1909, Semeru saw its deadliest eruption, which resulted in the destruction of 38 towns and 600–800 hectares of agriculture with pyroclastic flows and lava. In the eruption, 208 people died. Since then, the majority of the volcano’s outbursts have been small strombolian eruptions. In 1994, three persons perished as a result of an eruption.
