The natural surroundings, gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats of the city are well-known. It is well-known for dried fruits as well as traditional Kashmiri handicrafts like the Kashmir shawl (made of pashmina and cashmere wool).

It is the second-largest metropolitan area in the Himalayas, the 31st most populated city in India, and the northernmost city in India with over one million residents (after Kathmandu, Nepal).

The city is situated at the foot of the Zabarwan Mountain range, on both sides of the Jhelum River, known as Vyath in Kashmir. The river flows through the city before continuing to meander through the valley and deepening in the Wular Lake. Nine historic bridges that link the two sections of the city are well-known in the area. The city and its surroundings are home to a multitude of lakes and wetlands. The Dal, the Nigeen, the Anchar, Khushal Sar, Gil Sar, and Hokersar are a few of these.
