Amazon Quiz: Name this country home to universities such as the University of Waterloo, that recently reported student visa rejection rates of above 50%

USA

UK

Australia

Canada

Answer: Canada

Canada recently had a robust visa acceptance rate for students, but following the coronavirus pandemic, the numbers have dropped severely. In 2022, a spike in student applications drove up the number of rejections, with those trying to obtain a bachelor’s degree facing the highest chance of getting turned down. Those trying to pursue a PhD had the highest chances of getting through.

Sometimes visas are turned down for a range of reasons. One of them is a lack of English proficiency. If one isn’t versed in the language of communication in the country, then visas are usually withheld. To show authorities that one can handle speaking in English, student visa applicants must have TOEFL/IELTS test scores matching the requirement.

If students cannot show they have sufficient funds to make it through the first year of their program, they’re often rejected by authorities. Visas issued on study permits also need a date of return to be specified. If no long-term plans are in place, students are often denied visas because officials feel they might stay on.

While there’s no discernible reason yet for Canada’s most recent slew of visa rejections, the worrying aspect is that those who are academically strong are being turned down too. This has raised the pressure on people wishing to study abroad and it remains to be seen whether the visa situation is resolved.
