Edwin E Aldrin, popularly known as Buzz Aldrin, is a former American astronaut known all over the world as being the second person in history to step foot on the Moon’s surface after Neil Armstrong. Aldrin was the Lunar Module, Eagle’s pilot on the Apollo 11 mission. Besides Aldrin and Armstrong, the mission also included Michael Collins, the commander module pilot, who stayed in the lunar orbit.
Aldrin received a Doctor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializing in astronautics. He was the first-ever astronaut to carry a doctoral degree. Aldrin, who left NASA in 1971, name his doctoral thesis, Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous. This led to him being called Dr. Rendezvous by his fellow astronauts.
Post his stint with NASA, Aldrin took charge as the Commandant of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. His career in the US Air Force has also been extraordinary. Aldrin, who was involved in the Korean War, flew the fighter jet F-86 Sabres on 66 different combat missions. He even managed to shoot down two MiG-15 aircraft in the process.
Aldrin, now 92, continues to advocate space travel, especially to Mars. He also developed the Aldrin cycler, a spacecraft trajectory to make travel to Mars more efficient. He was honoured with the 1969 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
