Answer: Forbidden City
The Forbidden City is a palatial complex in Chinese capital’s Dongcheng district. Surrounded by opulent imperial gardens, the Forbidden City was built from 1406 to 1420. The Forbidden City was the home of Chinese emperors and their households and the centre of the Chinese government for over 500 years.
Forbidden City comprises 980 buildings encompassing 8,886 rooms and covers 178 hectares. UNESCO lists Forbidden City as the largest collection of ancient wooden structures in the world.
The name Forbidden City derives from its Chinese name Zinjin Cheng. This is a reference to the north star. In traditional Chinese astrology, the north star was regarded as the Celestial Emperor.
The Forbidden City was the seat of the Ming dynasty from 1420 to 1644. In April 1644, it was captured by rebel forces led by Li Zicheng, who proclaimed himself the leader of the Shun Dynasty. The Forbidden City was taken over by Anglo-French forces in 1860 during the second opium war.
