Palestinian National Initiative, founded on June 17, 2002, is a Palestinian political party led by Dr Mustafa Barghouti. The headquarters of PNI is located in Ramallah, Palestinian Territories. They are specifically based on the ideologies of Palestinian nationalism, social democracy, democratic socialism, pacifism, secularism, and anti-corruption.
The PNI has been established as the ”democratic third force” in Palestinian politics and it opposes the dichotomy between Fatah – which they consider to be corrupt and undemocratic and Hamas – which they consider extremist and fundamentalist.
Their ideology is displayed on their platform as –
“Only through the establishment of a sovereign, independent, viable and democratic Palestinian state on all of the territories occupied by Israel in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, can a just peace be achieved.
The Initiative calls for the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions requiring the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the West Bank and Gaza and safeguarding the internationally recognized right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland.”
Some former members of the left-wing Palestinian People’s Party, and some other secular intellectuals, dominate this party. Moreover, PNI is principally based on civil society organizations and NGOs operating in the Palestinian Territories. It is backed by extensive connections through foreign aid and support groups.
