Answer- Wat Arun
The Wat Arun temple, whose full name is Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan, is located in Bangkok’s Bangkok Yai district. The temple is located on the Chao Phraya River’s west bank. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Aruna, who is the charioteer of Surya, the sun god.
The temple has been in existence since the 17th century. Earlier, there was a Buddhist temple known as Wat Makok on the same site. The central piece of this temple’s architecture is a long ‘prang’ or spire encrusted with porcelain, which has a seven-pronged trident above it. The height of this structure is around 66.8-86 metres. Sculptures of Chinese soldiers and animals can be seen at the base of this prang. Symbolically, the prang is divided into three parts- the base representing existence in every realm, the middle standing for a place where desires of the heart are fulfilled, and the top representing the heavens and all realms of happiness.
From the temple’s entrance to its ubosot (ordination hall), there are a number of sculptures of yakshas or demons from the Ramakien, which is the Thai version of the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Taksin, the king of Thonburi, had established his new empire near this temple after the Ayutthaya kingdom fell. Notably, Taksin’s royal palace was built around the temple before his son decided to move the same. From 2013 to 2017, the temple went through an extensive restoration. However, the restoration work met criticism upon its completion. However, the Thai government’s Fine Arts Department argued that the restorations have made the temple’s appearance close to what it was originally.
