Paavo Nurmi Games

Answer: Paavo Nurmi Games

Neeraj Chopra broke the national record at Finland’s Paavo Nurmi Games with a spectacular 89.30-meter throw in his second attempt, which saw the javelin thrower end up with the silver.

Last year in Patiala, Chopra set the record at 88.07 meters. This marks his first international appearance since winning gold at Tokyo. Chopra took some time to find his stride but opened solidly with an 86.92-meter throw. Then came the magic number which helped catapult him to the fifth spot on the list of world leaders.

After this record, Chopra competed at the Kuortane Games in Finland before moving to the Stockholm leg of Sweden’s Diamond League.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur shared a clip of India’s golden boy’s throw and caption it, saying “Golden Great Neeraj Chopra does it again! Neeraj Chopra threw 89.30 metres at Paavo Nurmi Games to create a new National Record! Absolutely THRILLED. You’ve got to see his throw!”

Cricketing stars Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir both praised Chopra, with the former noting how the javelin thrower set the bar higher each time he competed. Former Union Minister and Olympic Medallist Rajyavardhan Rathore, meanwhile, said “Our decorated Olympian Neeraj Chopra sets a new national record. He finishes second at Paavo Nurmi Games with a new personal best throw at 89.30 m in Turku, Finland. Congratulations for winning. The nation is proud of you Neeraj Chopra. Keep shining!”
