Amazon Quiz: (June 28) One of the largest and busiest railway stations in the world, this famous station is located in which European city?

Paris

Madrid

Antwerp

Lisbon

Answer: Paris

The Gare du Nord, officially Paris-Nord, is one of Paris’s six major mainline railway station termini. The station serves as a hub for trains running between the capital and northern France via the Paris-Lille railway, as well as overseas locations in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

The Gare du Nord, located in the northern part of Paris near the Gare de l’Est in the 10th arrondissement, connects to many urban transportation lines, including the Paris Métro, RER, and buses. In terms of total passenger numbers, it is Europe’s busiest train station; in 2015, the Gare du Nord received more than 700,000 passengers each day.

The modern Gare du Nord was planned by French architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff, while the old complex was built on behalf of the Chemin de Fer du Nord firm between 1861 and 1864. The station superseded an earlier and considerably smaller terminal with the same name that operated from 1846 to 1860. The preponderance of its passengers were commuters travelling between Paris’s northern suburbs and surrounding villages.

The station will be completely redesigned as part of a major rehabilitation project that will take place between the late 2010s and the early 2020s. In anticipation for the 2024 Summer Olympics, the station’s footprint and passenger capacity will be significantly expanded, as will local amenities and the establishment of a new departure terminal. As a result of this renovation, the Gare du Nord will become Europe’s largest railway station.
