Roger Federer announced his retirement from tennis on September 15 through an Instagram post. This year’s Laver Cup which is scheduled to begin on September 23 and run until September 25, will be his final ATP event.
The Laver Cup is an international indoor hard court men’s team tennis tournament played between Team Europe and Team World, with players from all continents in Team World while only European players in Team Europe.
The competition began in 2017, with the fifth edition scheduled for 2022. It is usually held two weeks after the US Open, with the location rotating yearly between European cities and cities around the world. Each member of the winning team receives a $250,000 prize. Since 2019, the Laver Cup has been an official ATP Tour event.
Six top European players compete against six top players from the rest of the world in this competition. Each team is led by a tennis legend as its captain. Three of the six qualifiers are determined by their ATP singles ranking as of the Monday following the French Open in June.
Three of them are “captain’s picks,” as announced before the start of the US Open. Over the course of three days, 12 matches will be played (nine singles and three doubles). Each match victory on day one is worth one point, two points on day two, and three points on day three. The tournament is won by the first team to accumulate 13 points.
