India organises and commemorates the National Youth Festival to mark the anniversary of the birth of Hindu monk and philosopher Swami Vivekananda. A yearly gathering of young people who compete in a variety of events is the target audience for the festival.

The Indian Union Territory of Puducherry hosted the 25th National Youth Festival in 2022. On January 12, the anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s birth, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech to kick off the event.

During his address at the gathering, the Prime Minister remarked, “The youth of India carry democratic values along with demographic dividends. India considers its youths as development drivers”.

He further added, “The year 2022 is very important for the youth of India. Today’s youth has to live for the country and fulfil the dreams of our freedom fighters… The strength of the youth will take India to greater heights”.

As a part of the National Integration Camp (NIC), the National Youth Festival debuted in 1995. The festival features both non-competitive and competitive events and is held every January 12–16.

The festival, which is organised across Indian states and UTs and attracts thousands of young people each year, had “Saksham Yuva-Shashakt Yuva” as its mascot for its 25th iteration.

Anurag Thakur, the Union Sports Minister, and Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, the lieutenant governor of Puducherry, introduced the 2022 edition’s logo and mascot.
