Novelist Anita Desai was born in India on June 24, 1937. She currently holds the title of Emerita John E. Burchard Professor of Humanities at MIT. She has been named three times in the Booker Prize shortlist. For her book Fire on the Mountain, she was given a Sahitya Akademi Award by India’s National Academy of Letters in 1978.

Desai was born in Mussoorie to Toni Nime, a German immigrant, and D.N. Mazumder, a Bengali trader. Her father was a pre-war engineering student in Berlin and met her German mother while studying there. They later got married when it was still unusual for an Indian guy to marry a woman from another continent. Desai was raised in New Delhi, where the couple moved shortly after their marriage. She has two older sisters and a brother.
