Amazon Quiz: The flag of which country has been shown in the picture?
Options:
Antigua & Barbuda
Trinidad & Tobago
Jamaica
Barbados
Answer: Jamaica
Jamaica is a West Indian island nation. After Cuba and Hispaniola, it is the Caribbean Sea’s third biggest island. Jamaica is approximately 146 miles (235 kilometres) long and ranges in width from 22 to 51 miles (35 to 82 kilometres).
It’s about 100 miles (160 kilometres) west of Haiti, 90 miles (150 kilometres) south of Cuba, and 390 miles (630 kilometres) northeast of the nearest mainland point, Cape Gracias a Dios, on Central America’s Caribbean coast. Kingston is the country’s capital.
Although Christopher Columbus named the island Santiago when he first saw it in 1494, the ancient indigenous name of Jamaica, or Xaymaca, has survived. Many tourists still view it as one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, since Columbus described it as “the loveliest isle that eyes have beheld.”
The island’s colonial past is reflected in its numerous Spanish, French, and English place names. The vast bulk of the population is of African descent, descended from slaves brought there by European colonists. Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, yet it is still a Commonwealth member.
