The Leaning Tower of Pisa, also known as the Tower of Pisa (torre di Pisa), is the campanile, or unsupported bell tower, of Pisa Cathedral. It is notable for its roughly four-degree lean, caused by an unstable base. The tower is one of three structures in Pisa’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), together with the cathedral and the Pisa Baptistry.

The tower rises 55.86 metres from the ground on the cheap side and 56.67 metres on the high side. The stones at the base are 2.44 m wide. It is believed to weigh 14,500 tonnes. The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the north-facing staircase on the seventh floor has two fewer steps.

Due to soft ground that could not hold the structure’s weight, the tower began to lean during installation in the 12th century. It deteriorated after construction was completed in the 14th century. The tilt had reached 5.5 degrees by 1990. Between 1993 and 2001, the structure was stabilised by remedial work that lowered the inclination to 3.97 degrees.

The name of the architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been the subject of debate. For many years, the design was credited to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano, a well-known 12th-century Pisan resident artist famed for his bronze casting, particularly in the Pisa Duomo. In 1185, Pisano left Pisa for Monreale, Sicily, only to return and die in his homeland.

In 1820, a piece of cast carrying his name was found at the foot of the tower, but this could be linked to the bronze door in the cathedral’s façade that was demolished in 1595. According to a 2001 study, Diotisalvi was the original architect, based on the time of construction and similarities with other Diotisalvi works, most significantly the bell tower of San Nicola and the Baptistery in Pisa.
