The dance form depicted in the picture above is Flamenco. It is a dance form that originated in Spain. It is said to have started in the Andalusia region of Southern Spain.  The dance form is also often associated with those of Gitano ethnicity.

One of the new-age Flamenco dancer who is taking the Spanish audiences by storm is Miguel Fernandez, who goes by the stage name ‘El Yiyo’. The 24-year-old honed his skills watching videos on YouTube. He made his debut at Spain’s main opera house with a show he developed after Spain had imposed a lockdown to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Spain’s new flamenco prodigy was born into a Roma family in Badalona, near Barcelona, who are from the southwestern region of Andalusia, the birthplace of the art form which incorporates poetry, singing, guitar playing, dance and rhythmic hand-clapping and foot-stomping.

‘El Yiyo’ recalls catching the attention of flamenco dancer Manuel Jimenez, alias “Bartolo”, as a child while dancing at a family wedding.

“He told my parents that he wanted to give me free lessons, because I was a diamond he wanted to polish,” he had told AFP at Madrid’s Teatro Real before his debut performance there.
