Here are some interesting facts about Sweden:
– Sweden has twice as many people as Norway: Sweden has a population of roughly 10.3 million people. That is roughly twice as many people as there are in Norway! Furthermore, it is far larger than Denmark, the other Scandinavian nation, which has a population of roughly 5.8 million.
– Waste is imported into Sweden from Norway: Swedish folks are avid recyclers. Only 1% of waste is dumped in landfills; the other 50% is recycled or composted, and the other 49% is burned to produce electricity. Even though that may sound like good news, there is one major issue that has arisen as a result: there isn’t enough waste left to keep the incinerators functioning. Sweden has therefore developed a creative solution. To keep the lights on, they import garbage from Norway and the UK. And as an added plus, the nations pay Sweden to remove their garbage!
– Sweden has more than 50% forest cover: Sveaskog estimates that 57% of Sweden is covered in trees. That is specifically 23 million hectares, which is roughly the size of the United Kingdom. The Swedish Forestry Act governs how to manage forests in terms of both production and the environment. The Act mandates, among other things, that after a forest is cut down, new trees must be planted.
