Amazon Quiz: This famous pagoda is located in which country?

Myanmar

Thailand

Indonesia

Japan

Answer: Myanmar

Myanmar is known as the land of the pagodas. The country is home to nearly 1,479 pagodas, nearly a quarter of which are located in Sagaing Region. Pagodas are the site of seasonal pagoda festivals.

A pagoda is a tiered tower. While most of them are Buddhist, there are also Taoist pagodas. Pagodas draw their roots from the ancient stupas in India. Pagodas are also part of Chinese architecture. The oldest and smallest pagodas were built with wood, but most that survived were made of brick or stone.

Chinese pagodas were initially of square and circular bases with octagonal base structures. The highest Chinese pagoda is the Liadi Pagoda of the Kaiyuan Monastery.

Chinese pagodas typically feature Chinese iconography. There’s a belief that praying at pagodas will bring luck to students taking the Chinese civil service exams. When a pagoda in Yihuang County in Fuzhou collapsed in 1210, local inhabitants correlated the disaster with the failure of candidates in prefectural exams. The pagoda was rebuilt in 1223 with names of recently successful candidates inscribed on it.
