The picture given here is of the Chandigarh Rock Garden. Also known as the Nek Chand Saini’s Rock Garden of Nathupur, the garden was set up by Nek Chand Saini, a government official. The garden was built secretly through 1957.
The Chandigarh Rock Garden adjoins Sukhna Lake. It is made up of numerous interlinked waterfalls and other sculptures made of scrap and other kinds of waste. The waste is placed in walled paths.
The garden was made by collecting material from demolition cites from across Chandigarh. His intent was to create his own version of the kingdom of Sukrani. The area where the garden was built was marked out as a conservatory in the year 1902 and Saini’s work was illegal.
He managed to hide the garden for 18 years, until authorities found it in 1976. At this time, the garden had grown to 12 acres with complex interlinked courtyards, each filled with pottery-covered concrete sculptures. In 1976, the park was inaugurated as a public space.
