Singapore
South Korea
Answer: Singapore
At One Fullerton in Singapore, close to the Central Business District (CBD), Merlion Park is a well-known icon and a popular tourist destination. The Merlion, a legendary being with a lion’s head and a fish’s body, is frequently utilised as Singapore’s mascot and representative of the country.
There are two Merlion statues in the park. The 8.6-meter-tall original Merlion structure shoots water out of its mouth. A Merlion cub, which is now there and is situated next to the original monument and is just 2 metres tall, has since joined it.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) created the original Merlion Park as a representation of Singapore in 1964, close to the mouth of the Singapore River. The park was formally inaugurated on September 15, 1972, during a statue installation ceremony presided over by Singapore’s then-prime minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.
At the mouth of the Singapore River once stood the original Merlion statue. Beginning in November 1971, construction on the Merlion was finished in August 1972. It was created by Mr. Lim Nang Seng, a late Singaporean sculptor, and his 8 children. The sculpture is 8.6 metres tall and 70 tonnes in weight. Stanley Mok built this enormous monument with the rushing stream.
The former Merlion Park position was no longer the entry to the Singapore River when the Esplanade Bridge was finished in 1997, and the monument could no longer be seen plainly from the Marina Bay Waterfront.
The statue was moved to a new, specifically constructed pier next to the Fullerton hotel on the other side of The Esplanade Bridge on April 23, 2002. On April 25, 2002, the $7.5 million relocation was finished.
The modern Merlion Park, which is four times larger than the original site, was officially opened on September 15, 2002, by then-Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
