Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories, Sherlock is a British mystery crime drama television series. Starring Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, the show was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
Four three-part series that ran from 2010 to 2017 and one special episode that aired on January 1, 2016, make up the thirteen episodes that were created. The one-off special features a Victorian-era fantasy that is similar to the original Holmes stories, while the series is set in the present.
Executive producers for Sherlock include Moffat, Gatiss, Sue Vertue, and Rebecca Eaton. The show is produced by the British network BBC and Hartswood Films.
The Masterpiece anthology series on PBS, which also airs in the United States, is backed by the American station WGBH-TV Boston. The exterior scenes of Holmes and Watson’s 221B Baker Street home are shot on North Gower Street in London, however much of the series is shot in Cardiff, Wales.
Along with tie-in versions of specific original Conan Doyle stories and an original soundtrack written by David Arnold and Michael Price, the entire series has been made available on DVD and Blu-ray. Sherlock: The Network, the show’s official mobile app, was released in January 2014.
