Answer: Christopher Colombus

The image is the statue of Christopher Colombus in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The city of Santo Domingo is home to the Christopher Columbus monument. The statue is located in Columbus Park, which is flanked by other very significant historical structures including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Incarnation, which is regarded as America’s first cathedral.

Italian explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus successfully performed four Spanish-based expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean that were funded by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, paving the way for later broad European exploration and colonisation of the Americas. His explorations marked the beginning of European exploration in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

The Americas were brought under the control of Europe thanks to the exploration, conquest, and colonisation that began with Columbus’s expeditions and continued for centuries. The Columbian exchange refers to the movement of goods, concepts, and people between the Old and New Worlds after his first journey. In the decades following his passing, Columbus was generally revered, but in the twenty-first century, the public’s opinion of him has deteriorated as a result of researchers’ increased focus on the negative effects of his rule, particularly the start of the Tanos people’s depopulation due to mistreatment, Old World diseases, and their enslavement. The explorer died on died May 20, 1506.
