In the decades following his passing, Columbus was generally revered, but in the twenty-first century, the public’s opinion of him has deteriorated as a result of researchers’ increased focus on the negative effects of his rule, particularly the start of the Tanos people’s depopulation due to mistreatment, Old World diseases, and their enslavement. The explorer died on died May 20, 1506.
