Werewolf by Night is the first TV special by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story of the special focuses around a group of monster hunters who have gathered at Bloodstone Temple, the manor of Ulysses Bloodstone, the deceased leader of the group. Ulysses’ wife tells the ones gathered that it is now time to select a new leader.
She tells them that a monster has been let loose within the estate, and the one who manages to find the creature and kill it first will be declared the new leader. Among the monster hunters is a certain individual called Jack Russell, who is here to rescue the monster, later revealed as Man-Thing. Another important figure among the monster hunters is Elsa Bloodstone, the estranged daughter of Ulysses.
The special pays homage to campy horror movies from the 1920s-1940s. Shot completely in black and white except some of the last scenes, Werewolf by Night uses a 3:4 aspect ratio that we usually find in old movies. The music of the special also harks back to old classics like Wizard of Oz and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
Kevin Fiege has already said that the characters introduced in the special will become very important to the MCU going forward, while director Michael Giacchino has said that he has plans about where he would want to take these characters next.
