Verified accounts on the platform were given a blue tick mark which was earlier free and done on Twitter’s own initiative. However, since Elon Muck too over the platform, it was announced that users can get the blue tick for a $8 monthly fee.

The method gave readers of the website a way to discern between real prominent account holders, like celebrities and organizations, against imposters or parodies when it was first introduced in June 2009. 

By placing a blue checkmark next to an account name, Twitter made it clear that it has taken the necessary measures to confirm that the account belonged to the person or organization it claimed to represent until November 2022.

A day after the 2022 US elections, on November 9, 2022, the new verification system went live.

The decision to postpone its launch was made to allay worries that users might spread false information about election results by impersonating news organisations and lawmakers.
