Amazon Quiz: What is a group of this bird known as?
Swarm
Herd
Parliament
Murder
Answer: Parliament
A group of owls is called a parliament in yet another example of how quirky the English language can be. Similarly, a group of crows is called a murder. While owls are normally seen solo or in pairs, it is unclear when the term for the collective emerged.
Owls likely get this term since they have long been associated with wisdom and knowledge. However, it was the 1950s children’s book ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, where the author described a group of owls as a parliament and owing to the popularity of the book, the term spread widely enough to become cemented in popular culture and make its way to daily parlance.
In Narnia, the magical land in the children’s book, the parliament of owls gathered each night to talk about the state of the kingdom. Of course, over the books, readers have seen how Narnia has run into trouble, most memorably from the White Witch who cast the land into a never-ending winter. Of course, it would take the courage of four British schoolchildren, Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy, to defeat the evil and return order to the lands, eventually becoming the destined kings and queens of Narnia.
There are over 200 species of owls and most of them are solitary and nocturnal birds. They mostly eat other animals including insects and even small birds. Some owls, found in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, also eat fish.
