Tintin comics have been the staple of many a child growing up with a yearning for adventure. Created by Herge, the Belgian cartoonist, the stories focus on the protagonist, who travels around the world with his dog Snowy.
Tintin is a reporter and is often joined by his friend Captain Haddock, the drunk but jovial Merchant Marine Captain.
Initially, Tintin was introduced in a weekly youth supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle in 1929. The character is known for intelligence and compassion, and the young round face with a quiffed hairstyle quickly became a mainstay on comic shelves.
The investigative reporter often gets up to all sorts of trouble and takes down bad guys, which gives viewers a chance to see various exotic places through Tintin’s eyes. However, the character died in 1982, but the legend of Tintin has far transcended mere comics and can be seen in murals and various other tributes.
One such take was the 2011 movie ‘The Adventures of Tintin’, directed by Steven Spielberg. While it was not one of the American director’s best works, Spielberg is almost singlehandedly responsible for introducing the idea of Hollywood blockbusters with his movie ‘Jaws’. True to form, his Tintin film sees the protagonist on another grand adventure, where after some nail-biting drama, the reporter once again ends up saving the day.
Radio shows, plays, television series have all told the tale of Tintin at one time or the other.
