Amazon Quiz: What, literally meaning ‘archipelago’ in Javanese, is the new capital of Indonesia?

Options:

Bandung

Surabaya

Medan

Nusantara

Answer- Nusantara

The decision to replace Jakarta as the nation’s capital was initially declared by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in 2019. When announcing his intention to replace Jakarta as capital in 2019, Widodo emphasised the city’s growing environmental problems as well as financial inequalities. The measure was later created by his administration and approved by the Indonesian parliament on Tuesday.

In a 2019 tweet, the president had said, “The government has conducted an in-depth study, especially in the last three years. As a result, the most ideal location for the new capital city is in East Kalimantan, partly in Kab. Penajam Paser Utara and some in Kab. Kutai Kartanegara.”

In the “first semester” of 2024, Jakarta will cede its designation as the capital of Indonesia to Nusantara, where 256,142 hectares of land have been set aside for the project. Nusantara will thereafter serve as “the domicile for Institutions, State, representatives of foreign countries, and representatives of international organizations/institutions.”

According to Saan Mustofa, the deputy chair of the special committee writing the bill, Nusantara would be run by a chief authority whose position would be on par with that of a minister, according to Reuters.

The main justifications given by Widodo for creating a law to move the nation’s capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan were the city’s growing pollution and population.
