Egypt

Answer: Egypt

According to a study from the University of Munich, watermelon varietals were cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. The scientists came to the conclusion that the fruit would have tasted very similar to our watermelon today, with sweet, crimson flesh.

Wild watermelons are small, white, and contain cucurbitacins, which have a bitter flavour. Although the precise moment and location of their domestication are unknown, some research points to west or south Africa.

However, there are several depictions of what appear to be watermelons on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs, and in 1876, the fruit’s leaves were found inside a tomb that was 3,500 years old.
