Options:

South Africa

Answer- Portugal

The largest wave ever recorded in the history of surfing was off Portugal’s Praia do Norte, Nazaré’s coast. The surfer who surfed this wave, Sebastian Steudtner from Germany, was honoured with a Guinness World record after competing this feat. The height of the wave Steudtner managed to surf was 86 feet, which is six feet higher than the previous record.

After his performance, Steudtner said on Instagram, “I’m really proud of this achievement and of my whole team’s performance”. He further added, “It was my dream since I was a kid to become a surfer and I’ve always stayed true to that… I hope my journey and this world record will inspire lots of others to chase their dreams as well!”

It was at an event organized by the World Surf League on October 29, 2020 that Steudtner managed to achieve this feat. In his Guinness World Record interview, the surfer said,  “I have achieved everything there is in my sport. It has been a crazy journey to get here and the record is much more than just a number… It’s a year long very physical training, working on my equipment together with my partners and improving processes with my team, especially safety and media wise.”

Praia do Norte was also the place where Steudtner’s training partner, Maya Gabeira, achieved the surfing record in the female category after surfing a wave of 73.5 feet.
