Answer: Edward Munch
Edvard Munch ( December 12, 1863 – January 23, 1944) was a Norwegian painter best known for his work: ‘The Scream’, which has overtime become an iconic image in world art.
His childhood was marred by illness and the great of inheriting a hereditary mental condition. He was studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Oslo (Kristiania), when Munch was urged by Hans Jægerto to paint his own emotional and psychological state. And it was from here that his distinctive style emerged.
In Paris he learned from Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the fine art of colour. He met the Swedish dramatist August Strindberg in Berlin whom he painted later, depicting him with a series of deeply-felt themes such as love, jealousy, anxiety and betrayal.
He developed emotional insecurity as his stature grew, both financially and socially. He considered marriage, however, couldn’t commit himself. In 1908, a breakdown forced him to leave heavy drinking. He spent his later years working in peace and solitude. Although Nazi Germany banned his works, most of the arts survived World War II thereby securing him a legacy.
