Sichuan is in the southwestern region of China, in the upper Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) valley. Sichuan is the second biggest province in China. It is bordered on the north by the provinces of Gansu and Shaanxi, on the east by the territory of Chongqing municipality, on the south by the provinces of Guizhou and Yunnan, on the west by the Tibet Autonomous Region, and on the northwest by the province of Qinghai.

It is one of China’s most wealthy and economically self-sufficient areas, thanks to its moderate and humid climate, fertile land, and vast mineral and forestry resources.

Some have referred to the area as a microcosm of China, and it is sometimes referred to as a nation inside a country. The basin is known as Tianfu Zhi Guo in Chinese, which means “Heaven on Earth.” 188,000 square miles of land (487,000 square km). The population was 80,418,200 in 2010.
