Amazon Quiz (October 31): Which city will be home to India’s first-ever Water Metro project?
Kochi
Chennai
Kolkata
Ahmedabad
Answer: Kochi
The Greater Kochi region’s Kochi Water Metro is an integrated ferry transportation proposal put up by Kochi Metro Rail Limited. It acts as a feeder service to suburban areas near rivers when access to transportation is scarce. The project received the final green light in October 2019, and the first phase was finished in 2021.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opened the first route between Vytilla and InfoPark, which was built as part of the project’s Phase I, on February 15, 2021. As services did not start until March 2022, the inauguration was merely a pre-election ceremonial event. The newly announced launch date has been postponed to July 2022.
For the project, two modernised, air-conditioned, and Wi-Fi equipped catamaran passenger boat types are suggested. The boats with passenger capacities of 50 and 100 run at a maximum speed of up to 22 kph, which is about what they should be doing.
The newest safety and communication technology is installed in the boats. On the congested lanes, small battery-operated boats operate.
On various routes, the headways range from 10 to 20 minutes. It is suggested that the jetties have floating pontoons equipped with autonomous docking technology. To provide comfort during the rainy season, retractable sheds will be placed over the floating pontoons.
Intelligent Navigation System (INS) and Operation Control Center (OCC), which will be connected to the city’s intelligent transportation system, are also planned as components of the infrastructure. The Kochi Metro will expand its Automatic Fare Collection system to include water transportation, making it easier for passengers to use one ticket for both the train and the boat.
