On July 8, 2014, in the first semi-final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil faced Germany at the Estadio Mineirao football stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. 

Both Brazil and Germany reached the semi-finals maintaining an undefeated record. At their quarterfinals with Columbia, Brazil’s forward Neymar had an injury and their Captain Thiago Silva could not play the match due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

The match ended with a historic loss for Brazil with the ending scoreboard of 7-1. Germany scored five goals in the first half-hour of the match, with four goals being scored in a six-minute time span. Germany scored two more goals in the second half. Brazil’s Oscar scored a consolation goal in the last minute.

Germany’s midfielder Toni Kroos was selected as the Man of the Match. He had scored two goals in two minutes. 

The match made several records. Germany’s win marked the largest margin victory of a semi-final in the history of FIFA. Germany also overtook Brazil as the highest-scoring team in World Cup tournament history. Germany also became the first team to reach eight World Cup finals. 

Being held in the home country, Brazil’s defeat was named a national humiliation and evoked a spirit of national shame. Germany went on to win the World Cup, beating Argentina in the finals.
