According to the think tank, India was the third-largest emitter with 6.6% of emissions, followed by the US at 11%. Without a deal between the US and China, scientists caution, it will be difficult to stop disastrous climate change.

Despite having the largest population in the world and lower per-person emissions than the US, the study found that China’s emissions have tripled over the past 20 years. China has promised to achieve net-zero emissions with a peak no later than 2030 by the year 2060.

At a forum on climate change that US President Joe Biden organised last month, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his commitment.

“This major strategic decision is made based on our sense of responsibility to build a community with a shared future for mankind and our own need to secure sustainable development,” President Xi said.
