The All England Open Badminton Championships, held yearly in England, is the world’s oldest badminton competition. With the implementation of the BWF’s most recent grading system, it was granted Super Series status in 2007, which was later promoted to Super Series Premier rank in 2011.
The world’s first open tournament was staged in the English town of Guildford in 1898, and its success prepared the way for the All England’s first edition in London’s Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the first edition only featured the doubles format, the singles format was added in the second edition. It was subsequently regarded as the sport’s unofficial world championship, notably following the first Thomas Cup series in 1949, until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation began its official championships.
It was interrupted twice: once from 1915 to 1919 (because of World War I) and again from 1940 to 1946 (due to World War II).
Akane Yamaguchi, the reigning world champion, won the women’s singles championship at the All England Open Badminton Championships on Sunday, giving Japan three titles in one of the sport’s most renowned competitions.
On the final day of competition at Utilita Arena Birmingham, Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida won the women’s doubles, while Olympic bronze medalists Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino won the mixed doubles.
Yamaguchi beat South Korean fourth seed An Se-young 21-15, 21-15 in a rematch of last October’s Denmark Open final, which the Japanese Olympian also won.
