Girl With a Pearl Earring is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer in 1665. It came to be known by its present title at the end of the 20th century.
The work is in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902 and has been the subject of various literary and cinematic works.
The painting is considered a tronie, the Dutch description of a painting that does not depict a portrait, but a head. The painting portrays a European girl, wearing an exotic dress, an oriental earring, and what appears to be a very large pearl as an earring.
The painting is an oil on canvas and is signed by the name of IVMeer, but is not dated.
Dutch army officer and art collector Arnoldus Andries des Tombe purchased the painting at an auction in The Hague, Netherlands in 1881. The work was donated to the Mauritshuis art museum after the death of des Tombe.
Girl with a Pearl Earring has now become one of the world’s most recognizable paintings, so much so, that it has even been compared to the Mona Lisa. In 2006, it was selected as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands by the Dutch people.
In 2003, a film of the same name was created based on the painting, with Scarlett Johansson playing the role of the Girl with the Pearl Earring. English actor Colin Firth played the role of Johannes Vermeer in the movie.
