Guus Hiddink and fellow Dutchman Pim Verbeek led the South Korean team to their first-ever World Cup victory as they defeated Poland in their opening group game. Following a 1-1 draw with the United States in the next game, they overcame Portugal 1-0 in the final group game to advance as group champions to the knockout stage.
Although there were contentious refereeing decisions, such as Francesco Totti’s second yellow card and an offside decision against Damiano Tommasi, South Korea defeated Italy 2-1 after extra time in the round of 16. They then outperformed North Korea in 1966 by defeating Spain on penalties in the quarterfinals. However, they were unable to continue after falling to Germany 1-0 in the semifinal.
