The superhero movie Spider-Man from 2002 is based on the same-named Marvel Comics character. It is the first film in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and stars Tobey Maguire as the title character with Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, and Rosemary Harris. The script was written by David Koepp.
The movie tells the tale of Spider-beginnings Man’s formative years as a superhero. Outcast kid Peter Parker has superhuman abilities after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. He then dons a mask to battle crime and injustice in New York City, coming face to face with the evil Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe).
In the 1980s, work on a live-action Spider-Man movie began. James Cameron, Tobe Hooper, and Joseph Zito were all initially attached to helm the picture. However, because of licencing and funding issues, the project would linger in development hell.
Following a nearly 25-year hiatus in production, Columbia Pictures 1999 obtained options from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on all prior scripts created by Cannon Films, Carolco, and New Cannon. This allowed Columbia Pictures to licence the movie for a global release.
Sony hired Koepp to write a working screenplay (credited as Cameron’s) after exercising its option on just two components from the multi-script acquisition (a different screenplay was written by James Cameron, Ted Newsom, John Brancato, Barney Cohen, and Joseph Goldman). Koepp received sole credit in the final billing.
Directors Before Raimi was selected as the project’s director in 2000, Ang Lee, Chris Columbus, Barry Sonnenfeld, Tim Burton, Michael Bay, Jan de Bont, M. Night Shyamalan, Tony Scott, and David Fincher were all given consideration.
Scott Rosenberg revised the Koepp script in pre-production, and Alvin Sargent added dialogue polish in production. From January to June 2001, movies were filmed in New York and Los Angeles. The movie’s visual effects were handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks.
