When questioned about the dark undertones of his short story “Escape From Spiderhead” in a 2010 interview, author George Saunders delivered an answer that would make any moviemaking executive sit up straight with curiosity. “More and more these days what I find myself doing in my stories is making a representation of goodness and a representation of evil and then having those two run at each other full-speed, like a couple of PeeWee football players, to see what happens. Who stays standing? Whose helmet goes flying off? ” Saunders pondered.
Nothing makes Hollywood happier than seeing heroes and villains clash like crazed jocks for the enjoyment of the audience. And now, in the star-studded Netflix movie Spiderhead, viewers may experience that bizarre spectacle. Joseph Kosinski’s picture, based on Saunders’ narrative, is a classic cinematic confrontation between good and evil. But it has enough of Saunders’ acerbic intelligence and wit to set it apart from usual summer fare—at least until it reaches its unoriginal end.
Spiderhead is set in the eponymous future prison, a brutalist island colony outfitted with beautiful mid-century-modern furnishings, with a script developed by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The detainees are free to go around, play foosball and video games, and eat canapés. Their cells appear to be comfortable dorm rooms, and their jailer is an affable scientist named Steve Abnesti (played by Chris Hemsworth) who maintains a “open-door policy.” (With the exception of the prison’s real exit, all doors are unlocked.) The disadvantage is that each inmate gets a large “MobiPak” implanted on their lower back, which is stocked with experimental medications that can flood their circulation in a split second, and Abnesti is in command of every dose.
