Amazon Quiz: Which of these space exploration companies is in the eye of a storm after reportedly violating US labour laws in recent layoffs?
Spacecraft engineering company SpaceX sacked a group of employees who were involved in writing an open letter to leaders of the company that slammed CEO Elon Musk. Labor attorneys have said that the firings could possibly have violated US labor laws.
Writers of the letter called for stricter anti-harassment policies at the company and for Musk to be less active on the micro-blogging platform Twitter.
At least five workers were sacked shortly after the letter was circulated, according to The Verge.
It is not clear yet if any of the ex-employees will attempt to file a suit with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). However, if they do so, attorneys believe that the case would be strong.
“To be covered, an action has to be concerted (certainly the case here) and it has to relate to working conditions,” said Charlotte Garden, a law professor at Seattle University.
“This could very much be seen as retaliation for speaking up. What does this say to workers? It basically says, we don’t want to hear from you,” said Mary Inman, an attorney at Constantine Cannon.
