Sushil Kumar, the former Indian wrestler, is currently imprisoned on murder charges. He was the country’s flagbearer for the 2012 London Olympics.
He won the 2010 World Championship in wrestling, bagged gold medals in three consecutive Commonwealth Games– 2010 Delhi, 2014 Glasgow, and 2018 Gold Coast.
Kumar won bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and silver at the 2012 Olympic Games held in London.
Kumar, born in Baprola village in south-west Delhi, had earlier refused to be featured in an alcohol commercial. He had then said, “I didn’t want to be associated with a liquor brand in any form as it would send a wrong signal to the youth. The sporting tradition that I have been raised in values discipline way above money.”
According to the chargesheet brought against the champion wrestler in the murder case, “Kumar is the kingpin of the murder who hatched a conspiracy to kill Dhankad with the help of the co-accused… Since Kumar was the all-in-all of Chhatrasal stadium, therefore, he chose this place to execute his conspiracy”.
