Amazon Quiz: Which river, the second longest in Europe after the Volga, is shown in this picture?

Po

Danube

Rhine

Seine

Answer: Danube

This is one of Europe’s major rivers and at one time a longstanding front of the Roman Empire. Today, it connects 10 European countries and runs through their territories or acts as a border.

The river became increasingly important during the Russia-Ukraine war, which is playing out in the breadbasket of the world and causing a potential risk of world hunger. Russia, thus far, had created a blockade, preventing Ukrainian grain from leaving the country. Sea routes via the Black and Azov Seas had to go past Russian warships and there was a constant siege on Odesa and Mariupol, the latter falling to Vladimir Putin’s forces after a protracted fight.

On the other hand, railways did not solve the problems either, since Ukraine has a different track gauge from its days of being a part of the Soviet Union. The gauge for the rest of Europe is not suitable for trains leaving the war-torn country. Thus, in a desperate attempt, the ports on the river Danube started being used as measures to move Ukrainian grain in an attempt to alleviate world hunger.
