India’s Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesia’s Anthony Sinsuka Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in the match, helping his country lead by 1-0.
In the second match between two pairs, India’s Satwik and Chirag defeated Indonesia’s Ahsan and Sukamuljo by 18-21, 23-21, 21-19.
The third fixture witnessed India’s K. Srikanth beat Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie. Srikanth won with a score of 21-15, 23-21.
Lauding India’s victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that the team “scripted history.”
“The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our accomplished team and best wishes to them for their future endeavours. This win will motivate so many upcoming sportspersons,” Modi said.
The Thomas Cup, also known as the World Men’s Team Championships, is a badminton tournament where several teams represent their countries that are members of the Badminton World Federation, the international governing body of the sport.
