The mission’s goals included measuring Mercury’s environment, atmosphere, surface, and body characteristics as well as conducting comparable research on Venus.

Experiments in the interplanetary medium and experience with a dual-planet gravity assist mission were secondary goals. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Bruce C. Murray oversaw the scientific division for Mariner 10.

Based on their shared purpose, the parts of Mariner 10 can be divided into four divisions. Throughout the voyage, the spacecraft’s computer, attitude control systems, power subsystem, and solar panels maintained good operation.

The hydrazine rocket and the guidance system would maintain Mariner 10 on course for Venus and Mercury. At the two planets, a number of scientific devices would gather data. Finally, the antennas would relay this information to the Deep Space Network back on Earth and take mission control orders.
