Answer: Allyship

Allyship is an English language neologism usually used in contemporary social justice activism in order to describe efforts by groups of people to attend to the interests of marginalized groups.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines allyship as ‘the state or condition of being an ally: supportive association with another person or group’. The term specifically refers to ‘association with members of a marginalized or mistreated group to which one does not belong to’.

Although the term has appeared in English-language sources since the 1840s, its present meaning only came into use during the late 1900s. The term allyship entered into widespread use specifically during two instances – the presidency of Donald Trump, and the emergence of political activism following the murder of George Floyd.

Proponents of the concept believe that allyship is a response to social evils like discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and sexism.

However,

the concept of allyship has faced opposition from many scholars and commentators who hold conservative and classical liberal views. It has been alleged that the term is ideological and performative and may ignore prior concepts of solidarity and tolerance.

The word gained so much usage during the year 2020, that in the following year 2021, it was announced as Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year.
