Answer: Neeraj Chopra
Neeraj Chopra, the Indian javelin thrower who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year, was ruled out of the Commonwealth Games which took place in UK’s Birmingham from July 28 to August 8, 2022.
Neeraj Chopra had suffered a groin injury during the World Athletics Championship (WAC) where he won a silver medal. He was hopeful of recovering before the Commonwealth Games but did now.
“I had been feeling uncomfortable after the pull I felt in my groin during my fourth throw at the world championships,” Chopra said in a statement on social media. “On having it investigated medically yesterday by a group of doctors here in the US, a minor strain was discovered and I have been advised to undergo rehabilitation and give it rest for the next few weeks,” he wrote a few days prior to the Commonwealth Games.
Neeraj Chopra is only the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. The first one to win a medal at WAC was Anju Bobby George.
The 24-year-old further said: “Needless to say, I am hurt about not being able to defend my title and missing out on another opportunity to represent the nation.”
“I am especially disappointed about losing out on the opportunity to be Team India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony, an honour I was looking forward to having in a few day’s time,” Chopra said.
